English below/ ナショナルジオグラフィック日本版が、3月30日発売号で30周年を迎えます。1888年に創刊され、世界で最も読まれている雑誌のひとつとして、自然科学や宇宙、考古学、社会問題など、幅広い話題を提供してきたナショナルジオグラフィック誌が、30年前から日本語でも読めるようになりました。僕も含め、多くの日本の人の知的好奇心を刺激し続けてくれています。

その大きな節目となる日本版30周年記念特別号で、表紙に加え、巻頭２０ページを写真とエッセイで飾らせていただくという、大変光栄な機会をいただきました。テーマは「地球を抱きしめる」。

地球との付き合い方の節目ともいえる現在、このような大切な機会に、地球を旅しながら目にしてきた場面や感じてきたことを共有させていただけたらと思い、想いを綴り、編集部の皆さんと写真を選ばせていただきました。ぜひご覧いただければと思います。

National Geographic Japan celebrates its 30th anniversary with its latest issue released on March 30th. First published in 1888 and known as one of the most widely read magazines in the world, National Geographic has become available in Japanese 30 years ago. The magazine continues to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of many in Japan, myself included.

In this special issue, I am incredibly honored and humbled to make the cover, and to be given a 20-page opening feature of my photographs and essay. The theme is “Embracing Earth”.

We have reached a turning point where we need to truly rethink our relationship with this planet. Hoping to share what I have witnessed and felt throughout my journey so far, I’ve written my thoughts and selected the photographs with the editorial team.
